Nakuru joins world in celebrating Sight Day 2026 with calls for ensuring good eye health

Calls for ensuring good eye health took centre stage on Thursday October 8, 2026 during a free eye clinic held at Nakuru’s Mashambani Matatu terminus.

The event was hosted by Nakuru County Government Health Department in partnership with AGC Tenwek Hospital and Christian Blind Mission among others to celebrate World Sight Day 2026.

The free eye clinic targeted Matatu operators among them drivers as well as passengers who turned up in large numbers for the free eye checkups.

Speaking during the event, Dr. John Gitahi from Nakuru Level 5 Hospital revealed that they chose to hold the clinic at the Matatu terminus to reach out to the drivers and conductors.

He pointed out that the Matatu operators’ eye health is paramount as it goes a long way in ensuring safety on the roads as they go on with their duties.

“Our focus is on drivers because we know due to their busy schedule, they might lack that time to get to hospital. So today we are trying to address some of their eye challenges which we believe will also help reduce accidents on our roads,” he stated.

He added that, those whose challenges have been addressed are given directions or given drugs and glasses while others are refered to various facilities across the County.

Some of the services offered included screening to ascertain the challenges.

The beneficiaries lauded the organizers of the eye clinic.

Led by John Nderitu- a driver at 3NS and Ruth Ng’ang’a- a food vendor at Mashambani Matatu terminus, they stated that such clinics should be availed more.

On her part Faith Langat from AGC Tenwek Hospital lauded the partnership between the facility, Christian Blind Mission and the County Government of Nakuru towards matters eye health.

According to her, the partnership will see a four-year project on the same targeting 7 Subcounties in Nakuru.

Diana Ondari from Christian Blind Mission(CBM) commended Partners for working towards promoting eye health services.

She urged members of the community to visit health facilities and ensure good eye health.

According to her, the four-year project dubbed Vision Impact Project, will be implemented in Njoro, Molo, Subukia, Kuresoi North, Kuresoi South, Naivasha and Rongai.

World Sight Day is marked to raise awareness of the importance of good eye health around the globe.

This year’s event is marked under the theme ‘Love Yourself’.
