A seven-member committee has been established by Governor Susan Kihika to address sexual exploitation of children in Mai Mahiu area of Naivasha and other parts of Nakuru county.
Addressing press during the unveiling of the committee, Kihika noted that the committee will collaborate with national government officials.
Kihika tasked the committee to investigate the issue and submit a report by September 5, 2025.
This move follows a recent BBC exposé that revealed a disturbing trend of teenage girls, some as young as 12, being trafficked for commercial sex in Mau Mahiu.
The report highlighted a cycle of exploitation in which girls are lured, abused, and ultimately neglected.
Kihika emphasized the need for accountability at every level, including the family, community, and leadership.
She stated that the ongoing investigations must lead to prosecutions and a clear commitment to preventing future offenses.
“We must understand how this situation arose and identify the enablers, observers, and perpetrators,” she said.
In addition to forming the committee, the Governor said the County will ensure that survivors receive medical care and psychosocial support.
There are also plans to utilize both social and formal structures for education and surveillance.
This includes reintegrating affected children into formal education and providing their families with access to empowerment resources such as the County Wezesha Funds to help them start income-generating businesses.
