The County Government of Nakuru under the leadership of Governor Susan Kihika has cleared air on matters welfare of PWDs.
This follows concerns raised by PWDs over delays in disbursement of PWDs Fund.
On Tuesday September 15, 2026, the PWDs in Nakuru staged peaceful demonstrations over the same prompting the County Government of Nakuru to hold a meeting with the representatives of PWDs.
Nakuru County Secretary Dr. Samuel Mwaura led the consultative meeting that served as a platform for PWDs and their caregivers to present their concerns and discuss ways of enhancing support and inclusion.
During the meeting A key issue raised was the operationalization of the KSh27.5 million County Disability Fund.
County Executive Committee member for Youth, Sports, Gender, Inclusivity and Social Services Elga Riaga, pointed out that there was the need to establish the necessary Acts and regulations.
According to the CECM, lack of legal framework in place is what delayed the disbursement of the KSh27.5 million Disability Fund in the 2025/2026 financial year.
She was however quick to point out that the required legal framework has now been put in place, paving the way for the operationalization of the fund.
Sentiments echoed by Chief Officer for Economic Planning Dr. Victor Achoka who assured the PWD representatives that the funds will be provided for in the supplementary budget, with the process expected to commence next month.
He noted that the subsequent procurement process will take a few months before the funds can be disbursed.
Dr. Mwaura assured the representatives that the County Government remains committed to addressing the concerns raised and ensuring that Persons Living with Disabilities receive the support they deserve.
He further committed to establishing a monitoring framework to track the process and ensure that the commitments made translate into tangible support for PWDs.
The County leadership also encouraged PWDs to actively participate in public participation forums, where they can raise their concerns and contribute to decisions that affect their lives and communities.
