Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Hassan Joho now wants police and KWS officers to stop harassing youth engaging in fishing at Lake Nakuru.
The CS stated that he will be pushing to have youth continue earning a living from the fishing.
He was responding to concerns raised by Nakuru Town East MP David Gikaria during empowerment meeting.
Joho revealed that plans are underway to upgrade fishing trades and license fishing across the six Lakes in Nakuru County.
This, he said will go a long way in empowering women and youth.
According CS Joho, l the ministry aims to tap into the potential of the local lakes and provide rescue boats and support for fishers.
It should be noted that Fishing in Lake Nakuru was banned because studies by the Kenya Fisheries Service and other authorities found that the fish (such as tilapia) contain toxic heavy metals—including lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic—making them unsafe for human consumption.
The Senate Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations ordered an immediate stop to all fishing activities in Lake Nakuru due to public health risks and reports of forced disappearances or abuses involving local fishermen.
Meanwhile , Nakuru County Governor Susan Kihika and local leaders have pushed for fresh, transparent testing of Lake Nakuru fish to verify current safety levels and guide future policy.
