Butere Girls’ Gen Z play to proceed, Government assures public

The government has assured that Butere Girls High School students partaking in the drama play titled Echoes of War will proceed and showcase their presentation at the National level.

Basic Education Principal Secretary Professor Julius Bitok says the play will go on.

He was speaking in Nakuru on Monday April 7, 2025 during the official opening of  Term One Nationals Drama and Film Festival Competitions.

The PS admitted that there were some issues around the play but was quick to state that they have been resolved and the play will go on.

“I don’t want us to discuss more about the issues around the play for they have been resolved and I can assure the public that the play will go on,” he stated.

Last week the play had been banned leading to a court case by former student who challenged the decision.

The courts ordered the continuation of the play.

Echoes of War is written and acted based on the bloody youth-led protests, commonly referred to as the “Gen Z protests”, witnessed in Kenya last year.

The School’s Principal, Jennipher Omondi, had suspended its entire cast and crew comprising 50 students, reportedly after receiving a directive from State House.
