Government move to ban 50 harmful pesticide Products has been welcomed by stakeholders, who say there is also need to support Pyrethrum Processing Company of Kenya (PPCK), as a support towards safer Alternatives.
There is need for agroecological approaches towards the same and supporting registration and approval of safer alternatives as critical to ensure farmers access quality alternatives.

Acting Chief Executive Officer at Pyrethrum Processing Company of Kenya Ltd Carolyne Imbwaga has welcomed the government move to ban the 50 harmful pesticides.
Addressing Press in Nakuru on May 23, she noted that this is a right move towards non chemical pests Management and that it is a clear indication that the country is headed the right direction towards safer pest control methods.

She at the same time stated that it is a plus to PPCK which is producing end-user products among them pesticides that are free from harmful Chemicals.
According to her, Pyrethrum Pale Extract (Technical Grade) offers powerful natural knockdown performance, ideal for Eco-friendly effective Pest Control Products which all Kenyans should embrace towards safeguarding human and Environmental health.
Imbwaga called for the need to have concerted effort towards supporting PPCK through budgetary allocation.

She added that PPCK is working towards improving production of flowers, but was quick to add that there is need for support towards end use process through investment into modern equipment.
According to her, existing laboratories should be revamped to help farmers get high status materials that will increase production moreso in rural areas where we have our small scale farmers.
“We receive flowers from farmers from the counties that grow these flowers. As PPCK we have alternative for safer pesticides and we need to upscale the production and this will come through support that is required,” she stated.
According to statistics, Nakuru, Bomet, Nyandarua, West Pokot and Kericho counties are among the leading producers of Pyrethrum flowers among the 19 counties.
Pyrethrin is what is extracted from the flowers to produce various end-use products.
At the company in Nakuru, a business plan has been established to help Kenya upscale production to meet the global demand, as currently Kenya is less by 10 percent in production.
“We are ensuring acreage expansion of upto 70,000 acres to meet the demands. We are ready to support the safer pesticides for use in the country,” she stated.

The Pyrethrum Processing Company of Kenya Ltd is playing key role in Kenya’s economy and the livelihoods of numerous smallholder farmers.
It should be noted that Pyrethrum is a valuable export commodity and the industry offers sustainable livelihoods and income generation, particularly in rural areas.

Products Development Officer at the PPCK Caroline Koech reiterated that the company continues to produce new-end use products that do not have chemicals, friendly to the environment.

PPCK end-use products include:
Insecticides –Pyagro for crop protection, Pydust for grain storage, Pylarvex for larval mosquito control, Pymos for adult mosquito control, Pytix for tick control, Pymarc, for stalk borer control, Pareto Roach Spray for bedbugs and cockroaches Paresol, an aerosol for mosquito and housefly control.
