Nakuru Woman Rep calls on Kenyans in flood-prone areas to move to safer ground

Nakuru County Woman Representative Liza Chelule has advised residents living in flood-proneĀ and landslides-prone areas to take precautions and move to safer areas.

In her message of condolences to the families that have lost their loved ones in the Mai Mahiu dam tragedy that has claimed lives, Chelule said it was so unfortunate that the rains that should be a blessing are now turning out to be disastrous.
Through a phone interview, the Lawmaker also called on Kenyans to take collective responsibility and report any information to the administration for action to be taken.
“As Woman Representative in Nakuru, I want to condole with the families of Mai Mahiu who have lost their loved ones. In the same spirit we urge all Kenyans to be vigilant and work closely with Ministry of Interior in ensuring those in risky areas are transferred to safer places,” she said.
She also called on government to expedite the process of shifting Kenyans from areas prone to floods and slides to avert more deaths.
Her sentiments comes even as Disaster Management team have recovered 42 bodies following the tragedy.
The tragedy occurred after Old Kijabe Dam burst sweeping homes and vehicles in Mai Mahiu on Monday dawn.
Naivasha MP Jayne Kihara earlier visited the area where an a rescue and recovery of bodies is underway.
She called on locals to work closely with the Disaster team on the ground in arresting the situation.
