A Nakuru activisit now want Senate to come up with law on how citizens can recall President and Governors.
Laban Omusundi says he is doing this through a petition to the Senate.
This coming at a time Kenyans are marking 15 years since the constitution of Kenya was promulgated.
“In my own unique way of celebrating the 15 years of our progressive Constitution of Kenya 2010, on Thursday August 28, 2025 under the strength of article 119(1) of the Constitution, l will be filling a petition to the senate to come up with enabling laws of how Citizens can recall President, Deputy President, Governor and Deputy Governor when it deems fit,” he stated.
According to Omusundi, this move seeks to address a democratic gap where, unlike Members of Parliament and Members of County Assemblies who can be recalled by the electorate, the top executive offices remain insulated from direct citizen accountability between elections, save for impeachment, which is largely political in nature.
He added that his petition is anchored on the principle that sovereignty belongs to the people, and leaders hold office as trustees of that power.
By introducing a recall mechanism for the highest offices, the activisit argues that citizens will have a more direct and effective tool to demand accountability, transparency, and fidelity to the Constitution.
“As we celebrate a decade and a half of our transformative Constitution, this initiative reaffirms the need to continue deepening democracy, strengthening checks and balances, and ensuring that those entrusted with leadership can be held to account not just by political elites, but by the very people who elected them,” he said.
