The Multimedia University of Kenya on Wednesday held a solemn memorial service in honor of the Late Sylvia Kemunto, who was a student at the Faculty of Science and Technology.
The service served as a moment of reflection, tribute, and solidarity with the family and friends during this time of loss.
The memorial was attended by the University’s senior leadership, including the Chair of the University Council, Dr. Albert Kochei; Council Member, Dr. Beatrice Tonui; Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Geoffrey Kihara; and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic Affairs and Research & Innovation, Prof. Livingstone Ngoo.
Also present were members of the late Sylvia’s family, her classmates, close friends, faculty, and administrative staff from various departments of the university.
Their presence reflected the deep impact Sylvia had on the university community and the lasting legacy she leaves behind.
The university extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the Late Sylvia Kemunto and remains committed to honoring her memory.
The suspect surrendered to police at Sultan Hamud police station in Makueni County on April 3, after being on the run since March 31. He is believed to have fled to his rural home after allegedly killing Kemunto and stashing her body in a water tank at the university.
Kemunto, a first-year student pursuing Mass Communication and Computer Science, reportedly died on March 30.
The suspect told police he visited Kemunto’s room that day, knowing she would be alone. He said he had been trying to seduce her, but she resisted.
A confrontation ensued when he tried to touch her, during which he hit and pushed her, causing her to hit her head on the wall and collapse. He said he realized she was dead minutes later.
He allegedly folded her body into a large suitcase, took it to his room briefly, then dumped it in a rooftop water tank.
The late Kemunto will be laid to rest on Friday at her rural home in Kisii County.
