Njoro Member of Parliament Charity Kathambi on Wednesday supported calls for need to expedite the payments in terms of pension to retired teachers in the country.
While on the floor of the House, the Lawmaker noted that it is so painful that many retired teachers have to go through painful experience while following up on their pension.
She argued that teachers play key role in the education sector and nation as a while hence should be given dignity even in their retirement.
According to Kathambi, many retired teachers have even lost their lives even in their quest to have their retirement benefits paid.
She at the same time called on relevant agencies including Teachers Service Commission to work on a program that will see the smooth payment of retired teachers’ benefits on time.
Kathambi also noted that it is not only the retired teachers but many Kenyans who have served the nation in various departments who have to go through the same suffering for them to be paid their benefits.
She was contributing to the move taken by Kitutu Chache South MP Anthony Kibagendi who sought Statement from the Chairperson of the Departmental Committee on Finance regarding the persistent delays in the payment of pension and retirement benefits to teachers.
“These delays have caused immense hardship to many retired educators who dedicated their lives to serving our nation and deserve to access their benefits with dignity and without unnecessary bureaucratic obstacles,” stated Kibagendi.
The request sparked a meaningful debate in the House, with Honourable Members from across the political divide rising to express similar concerns.
According to Kibagendi, this demonstrates that the issue transcends partisan politics and requires urgent intervention.
He expressed optimism that the Committee will provide comprehensive responses and, more importantly, recommend lasting solutions to ensure that retired teachers receive their rightful benefits promptly and without further delay.
