The National Internally Displaced Persons(IDPs) Network has called for the need to revamp Nyumba Kumi and community policing at grassroot inorder to help address the rising abduction cases in the country.
The Network noted that Nyumba Kumi and Community Policing Committees are vast with identity particulars of members of community hence they should be well placed to understand whenever anyone is abducted in the community.

Speaking in Nakuru on Saturday February 1, 2025, the IDPs led by Patron Peter Tena noted that the DCI, Inspector General of Police or the Principal Secretary Ministry of interior should not be blamed whenever there are abductions.
According to Tena, the real issue is at the grassroot level where the Community Policing Committees are.
He wondered why such abductions are happening yet Nyumba Kumi and community policing committees are not aware of the same abductions.
“We shouldn’t blame the DCI or the Principal Secretary, but the problem is at grassroot level where we have Nyumba Kumi and community policing committees. How comes abductions are happening and this committees at grassroot level are not aware? This shows that something is wrong somewhere. We need to work from grassroot if at all we want to address this issue of abductions,” stated Tena.
Meanwhile, the IDPs Network raised concerns and their worry over the rising cases of abductions.
Tena pointed out that if this goes on without address, then it might plunge the country into skirmishes rekindling the scars of 2007/2008.
He was quick to add that the President should move with speed and ensure that the problem is addressed at grassroot from nyumba kumi and community policing committees.
According to him, such abductions may derail the good plans that the government has towards resettlement of IDPs.
“As IDPs Network and stakeholders of this country we know the government has good plans to resettle IDPs. But with such abductions, we are worried it might turn to skirmishes. This is the reason we are saying the nyumba kumi and community policing committees should come in hand and assist end this by reporting any abductions and the perpetrators,” said Tena.
He called on members of the network to work closely with the government of the day towards finalizing the resettlement of IDPs.
Sentiments echoed by Harrison Kariuki who noted that the ongoing abductions are not good for the country.
According to Kariuki, IDPs have been following up the ongoing abductions and are worried that if this goes on then it is pointing to bad direction towards 2027- the year of national elections.
“We experienced the scars of 2007 post election violence and therefore when we see rising cases of abductions then we are a worried lot it might lead to something else not good for the country,” he stated.
Sentiments that were echoed by Female IDPs led by Ms Susan Wambui.
She noted that the ongoing abductions can be addressed if the President will re-look at Nyumba Kumi members and the local administration at grassroot.
While boring that women are the ones who suffer most whenever there are skirmishes, Ms Wambui said the local administration and the nyumba Kumi should up their game in matters security to avert such abductions in community by reporting any suspicious activity within their jurisdiction.
