The County Government of Nakuru will work closely with stakeholders in addressing both environmental and operational challenges facing Lake Naivasha.
County Secretary, Dr. Samuel Mwaura revealed this on Wednesday June 19, 2024 while hosting a team from the Lake Naivasha Basin Landscape Association to discuss various environmental and operational issues affecting the lake.
Key among the issues raised by the team include illegal fishing, encroachment, human-wildlife conflict, and deforestation.
Dr. Mwaura stated that he would collaborate with other county officials to ensure the lake remains safe and sustainable.
At the same time, he advised the team to engage with European Ambassadors for assistance with the infringement scheme, lake survey, rehabilitation, and developing a resettlement plan for those affected.
On his part Environment Chief Officer Kennedy Mungai, announced plans to discuss the establishment of a Material Recovery Facility and a solid waste management plan to create a clean and conducive environment, further preserving the lake.
Sentiments echoed by Cooperatives Chief Officer, Kibet Kurgat, who stated that his docket will work with the team to form a cooperative.
According to Kurgat, the Co-operative will facilitate commercial activities, aligning with Governor Kihika’s agenda to support business people.
