President William Ruto on Tuesday 27, 2026 hosted the Kenyan winners of the 2026 Huawei Global ICT Competition at State House Nairobi.
Kenya emerged as a star performer in the competition, with three teams reaching the global finals in Shenzhen, China, and returned home with top honours.
“Our country’s crowning achievement came when the Cloud Track Team won the Grand Prize, the highest award in the competition and Kenya’s first since joining the contest in 2019,” stated President Ruto.
The Network Track Team secured Second Prize while an all-women Computing Team from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology also won Second Prize and received the prestigious Women in Tech Award.
The Head of State congratulated Mr Franklin Mutisya, a lecturer at Machakos University, together with Denzel Nzinga of Multimedia University, Robert Wambua of Kenyatta University and Joy Wairimu of the Co-operative University of Kenya.
“Their expertise in networking, cyber-security and wireless technologies represents the very skills required to secure our digital infrastructure and build the digital superhighway upon which our economy increasingly depends. This remarkable success reflects years of deliberate investment in digital infrastructure, skills development and innovation,” he said.
The President added that this demonstrates that Kenya possesses the expertise necessary to build advanced cloud infrastructure, artificial intelligence systems, cyber-security capabilities and the digital backbone needed for a modern economy.
He revealed that to support that vision, the Government has expanded the Digital Superhighway Programme, deploying an additional 37,000km of fibre-optic cable, establishing hundreds of digital hubs, training more than 1.9 million Kenyans in digital skills and facilitating the creation of over 350,000 digital jobs.
“We have also digitised 25,000 Government services, up from a mere 350 in 2022,” he stated.
