The Standard Group has appointed Alex Chepkoit, a seasoned journalist with close to twenty years of experience in the newsroom, to the position of Associate Editor-Production and Output.
Mr. Chepkoit will assume the role in which he will oversee the production of content throughout the company’s platforms while working with desk editors to help plan, shape, and deliver stories of the best quality.
This promotion, issued through a memo by Chief Executive Marion Gathoga Mwangi, aligns with the media house’s strategy to transition into a digital-first organization.
Mr. Chepkoit will also retain his job as the Nakuru Regional Bureau Chief, a position he has held since 2013.
Recognized for incisive reporting and editorial excellence, Mr. Chepkoit is expected to align the Standard Group’s editorial offerings with the media firm’s ambitions for a stronger digital platform.
Winner of several journalism awards, Mr. Chepkoit gained prominence in 2010 after receiving the David Astor Journalism Award, which highlights Africa’s most promising journalists. The award included a fellowship in the United Kingdom, where he worked with The Independent and The Observer, further refining his investigative and editorial skills.
Mr. Chepkoit has been a household name in media circles, excelling as an investigative and special features writer uncovering scandals, social injustices, and other critical issues. In 2012, he briefly stepped away from journalism to serve as a speechwriter and public relations officer at Kabarak University, crafting speeches for the late former President Daniel Arap Moi in his role as Vice-Chancellor.
In addition to his professional achievements, Mr. Chepkoit has an admirable academic background. He holds a Master of Science in Human Resource Management from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, a Master of Arts in Journalism and Communication from Egerton University, a Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication from Kenyatta University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Linguistic and Literature Studies from Moi University.
In her memo, Ms. Gathoga Mwangi described Mr. Chepkoit as a “dedicated professional” who will drive the mission and goals of the Standard Group forward. “Alex’s promotion not only reflects his immense contributions but also speaks to his vision for collaboration and progress in newsrooms,” she said.
As Associate Editor, Mr. Chepkoit is expected to maintain editorial excellence, foster an innovative and dynamic newsroom culture, and oversee the timely delivery of impactful content.
This new role positions the Salawa-born introvert at the forefront of the company’s transition to becoming a leading digital-first media organization.
The Standard Group editorial team has been encouraged to support Mr. Chepkoit in his expanded responsibilities.
