Nakuru artists, creatives set to benefit from SANARA initiative

Artists and creatives in Nakuru are set to benefit from SANARA a three-year transformative initiative designed to empower young talent through providing education on intellectual property rights and copyright protection.

Derived from the swahili word sanaa meaning art or creativity and biashara meaning business, SANARA ensures that artists can safeguard their work, monetize their talents and contribute to the city’s creative economy.Funded by the Mastercard Foundation the project is implemented by a consortium of HEVA, SNDBX, Baraza Media Lab and GoDown Arts Centre.

As part of the program, JGIP Consultants under the stewardship of Ms June Gachui is offering Intellectual Property (IP) training across six counties Nakuru, Nairobi, Kakamega, Kisumu, Turkana and Mombasa. The training focuses on key creative sub-sectors such as fashion, film, television, content creation, photography, live music and performing arts ensuring that creatives understand how to protect and commercialize their work.

Speaking at the launch training, Nakuru City Manager Mr Gitau Thabanja emphasized the County’s commitment to nurturing the creative sector aligning with Nakuru’s reinstatement as the African Coordinator of UNESCO Creative Cities under the Folk and Art category.

He highlighted Governor Susan Kihika’s dedication to supporting creatives and working closely with key partners and stakeholders to empower the creative community in the city.

Beyond the training, SANARA champions the adoption of sustainable and inclusive work environments. As the program rolls out, the City Manager urged creatives to maximize their talents, embrace the training and view the creative economy as a viable career path that can sustain livelihoods and contribute to economic growth.
