Governor Kihika’s key programs in Education Sector

When she took over leadership of County 032 after the 2022 August Polls, Governor Susan Kihika vowed to ensure improved environment for learners in Early childhood Education Centres, as well as vocational centres.

It should be noted that under devolved system, Counties have mandate on the same in the education department.

To fulfill her promise on the education sector, Governor Kihika rolled out three key programs that have continued to improve the education sector in Nakuru County.

1.BURSARY DISBURSEMENT 

Under her leadership, Governor Kihika has continued to ensure timely disbursement of bursary to needy and deserving learners.

Infact, there has been an increase in the kitty from the previous disbursement, a move that was affirmed by Nakuru County Executive for education Zipporah Wambui.

Sentiments echoed by Nakuru County Assembly Education Committee Chair PM Njoroge.

According to MCA Njoroge, through close collaboration with County Assembly, the County bursary process has been smooth through all the financial years.

It should be noted that already several students taking technical courses in the County Vocational training Centres have their fees catered for.

According to statistics from County Education Department, Governor Kihika is sponsoring each student with Ksh30,000 for tuition free.

2. ECDE CENTRES
Governor Kihika’s administration believes in the fact that ECDE CENTRES are key in shaping the foundation of learners.

For this reason, several strides have been made in ensuring a better environment for learners in the centres.

From infrastructure to distribution of books and age-appropriate furniture to ECDE learners across all the sub counties.
3. LISHE NA MAMA
The roll out of  LISHE NA MAMA uji Program which has significantly boosted enrollment in ECDE centers.

A fact that Nakuru County Deputy Governor David Kones confirmed during the disbursement of bursary for the financial year 2024/2025 at Afraha High School on January 22, 2025.

According to the DG, the program aligns with Governor Kihika’s broader efforts to boost and improve early childhood education in Nakuru County and will continue across the county.
It should be noted that The Lishe na Mama Program Courtesy of Governor Susan Kihika is currently feeding 65,000 children in 1,065 ECDE centers across the county.
4.RECRUITMENT OF ECDE TEACHERS
The County Government has continued to ensure enough ECDE teachers that caters for pupils-teacher ratio.
Currently, the county is in the process of absorbing 159 ECDE who were shortlisted in a very competitive exercise that saw over 800 teachers apply.
According to the County Government, the 159 will be distributed in all ECDE centres but based on need.
