A section of Nakuru County Assembly members have come out to differ with any plans to demolish county houses to pave way for other projects.
They say such a move is meant to derail efforts made in ensuring housing for the residents of Nakuru County who are also tenants of the County Government.
Addressing Journalists at the County Assembly, the MCAs led by Anthony Kamau Kanyere(Nakuru East Ward) said they will continue to advocate for the rights of the people who elected them.
MCA Kanyere claimed that meetings to execute the said demolitions are being carried out at night.
He added that the county Assembly of Nakuru shall not continue to be abused as a rubber stamp of programs that have not been subjected to public participation.
“The people who elected us are suffering and that is why we are saying we will not allow the county houses to be demolished to pave way for a few individuals to enrich themselves,” he stated.
Sentiments echoed by Naivasha East MCA Stanley Karanja.
He pointed out that there has been concern among tenants and business persons in Nakuru over the plans to have some houses demolished.
According to Karanja, any move should involve members of the public through public participation and then the County Assembly through the budget.
“There is nothing that can be done without a budget being in place. we shall stand with the people who are tenants in Nakuru Municipality,” he stated.
On his part, Nakuru County Assembly Majority Leader William Mutai pointed out of possible claims of Executive trying to interfere with the House Business.
Mutai was categorical that the County Houses issue in Kivumbini, Flamingo and Bondeni should be addressed amicably.
“Let there be public participation in the whole issues of housing touching on county houses,” he stated.
It should be noted that some months ago, Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika vowed to ensure a waiver on rent arrears for county houses in Kivumbini, Flamingo and Bondeni.
The Governor however came into agreement with tenants that they will commence paying rent afresh as from December 2024.
