Nakuru-based Rani Ramchandani Foundation team on Tuesday December 3, 2024 were hosted by Vihiga County government during the International Day of persons with disabilities 2024.
During the event hosted by Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo, over 100 PWDS received supportive devices.
Speaking during the event, Rani Ramchandani- the Founder Rani Ramchandani Foundation reiterated the need for empowering PWDs and ensure they enjoy fundamental rights.
“Let’s empower them, educate them, try to give them fundamental rights in society,” she stated.
The Nakuru-based philanthropist also challenged the society not to hide PWDs from the public.
She at the same time called on County Government of Vihiga and other well wishers to join her in the journey of ensuring all PWDs have smiles on their faces.
According to Rani, more than 13000 mobility devices have been donated to PWDs across the country.
“Don’t hide them but let us embrace them. I’m requesting County government and other well wishers to join me in this journey,” she stated.
The foundation also donated sanitary towels to the PWDs.
The International Day of Persons With Disabilities aims to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development.
Vihiga Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo who presided over the County celebrations at Mbale Municipal grounds, lauded Rani Ramchandani Foundation for the gesture adding that it will go long way in ensuring better welfare for PWDs.
The Governor pointed out that his administration has instituted several measures to ensure that matters disability have been addressed.
“We have implemented the Disability Act by constituting a Disability Board that will handle PWDs’ issues. Plans are also underway to set up a Disability directorate to specifically execute PWDs’ activities,” Said Dr. Ottichilo.
The County Boss also stated that the County Government has initiated talks with Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) to establish a PWD learning centre at Itando that will equip them with knowledge and necessary skills for the current job market.
Additionally, the Governor urged the Disability board to prioritize setting up a PWD centre while developing their strategic plan.
Vihiga County Department Of Gender, Culture and Social Services Executive Committee Member (CECM) Anne Desma assured the PWDs that her department is focused on supporting them become self-sustainable especially through own leadership.
