Nakuru County Government to formulate Taxation Policy by end of 2025

The County Government of Nakuru will have the first ever Taxation Policy by end of this financial year.

Director Resource Mobilization at the Finance Department Mr. Charles Lwanga revealed that the County will formulate the Policy before end of the financial year.

He noted that this will be in line with the County Government Act that requires counties to have a policy on taxation.

“I can assure you that Nakuru County will be the first to have a taxation policy and I’m sure before end of financial year we shall have the policy,” he stated.

Mr. Lwanga was speaking on Thursday February 20, 2025 during a meeting convened by Nakuru County Civil Society Organizations’ Forum(NASSCOF) to validate the Draft Nakuru County Tax Policy.

He lauded stakeholders for the role played towards the draft Policy adding that taxpayers have a right to understand how tax works.

Lwanga reiterated that the County Government of Nakuru remains committed towards transparency in matters revenue and called on citizens to visit the County website and understand more on matters revenue.

During the meeting Mr. Evans Kibet from Centre for Enhancing Democracy and Good Governance(CEDGG) that has played key role in the Evidence-Based Tax Policy Advocacy pointed out that County Government has the role of ensuring policies in place towards service delivery.

Addressing stakeholders during the meeting, she stated that taxes that citizens pay should reflect in service delivery adding that own source revenue is key for counties.

Moving forward, Bancy said they will engage the Executive and Assembly on the draft Taxation Policy to get their views and fine tune the document.

“We are grateful to the team that worked to ensure the draft is in place. Moving forward we shall engage the Executive and Assembly on the same,” she stated.

This will be the first ever Taxation Policy with Nakuru being the first one to come up with such.

The validation session was attended by Bodaboda groups, small-scale traders, farmers, Media and landowners.

The session also brought together county government officials and technical experts.

Once in place, the policy will go a long way in improving revenue performances while promoting the constitutional principles of Equity, Certainty and Ease of collection.
