Persons Living with Disability, ultra-poor and marginalized communities, but engaging in agriculture will benefit greatly following the launch of maize seeds, and avocado seedlings distribution.

This was revealed during the Flag-off at Nakuru Agricultural Training Centre Soilo on Monday April 28, 2025.
The initiative is being implemented by the County Government of Nakuru through the Department of Agriculture.

According to the County Government, a total forty (40) tonnes of maize seeds and nineteen thousand and ninety-six (19,096) avocado seedlings will be distributed to farmers, particularly Persons Living with Disabilities (PLWDs), the ultra-poor, and marginalized communities.
Speaking during the event, Deputy Governor David Kones revealed that this initiative targets 9,548 farmers across the county, aiming to promote food security, economic empowerment, and inclusive agricultural development.
DG Kones pointed out that the flagging off the distribution marks historic milestone in the calendar of Nakuru county.
“Today marks historic day in the Calendar of our county on matters agriculture as we launch the distribution of maize seeds and avocado seedlings to marginalized farmers,” he stated.

He used the moment to highlight some of the other strategies that the county government of Nakuru has put in place in the Agriculture sector.
Some of which include Artificial Insemination to farmers and distribution of subsidized fertilizers to farmers through outlets.
The DG also added that that Pyrethrum revival continues through distribution of Pyrethrum seedlings since 2004, as well as revival of cooperatives.
The county has also ensured that there is capacity building for saccos in Nakuru County towards affordable credit to farmers hence uplifting rural economy.
“The county is focused on empowering farmers and we urge farmers and beneficiaries to remain focused. This is in line with our strategy to empower the farmers in Nakuru County,” he said.
According to the DG, Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika has continued to recognize all persons in the County including PWDs who are participating in farming.
He reminded the county staff the need to avert mere talk but rather focus on service delivery.
“The Governor has taught us to focus on service delivery. Whichever department we are in, let us minimize talks but focus on the performance,” he said.
The DG used the moment to urge residents of Nakuru to continue working closely with the government in service delivery.
He also highlighted the development realized so far since Governor Kihika took over leadership mantle.
Sentiments echoed by Agriculture CECM Leonard Bor.
Bor noted that the sector has continued to make strides.
“This is a great move by our Governor in ensuring our county is secure in terms of food production. No one should be left behind in terms of building the economy in agriculture in supporting our farmers with inputs towards empowerment of farmers.,” he said.
He lauded the farmers of Nakuru county for their role in shaping agriculture in the county.
Chief Officer Agriculture Newton Mwaura called on beneficiaries to make good use of the opportunity.
On his part Chief Officer Livestock and Fisheries Dr. Michael Cheruiyot expressed their joy as a department, following the gesture.
“As a department we feel so happy when we go to the field and see avocado, maize, pyrethrum doing well courtesy of support from County Government.
He added that interventions among them food diversity key in addressing food security.
The event was also attended by Director Political Affairs Joseph Ruto.
“We thank the Governor for remembering the vulnerable in society through this distribution of seeds and avocado seedlings,” he stated.
The Political Director was categorical that already beneficiaries have been clearly identified.
While noting that the exercise shall be done and carried out by local administrators, he urged them to ensure peaceful exercise.
