Mututho: Illicit brew, drugs derailing Kenya’s economic growth

Illicit brew and drugs continue to derail the economy of the country, former NACADA Chairman John Mututho says.

Mututho says if urgent interventions are not put in place by government, then Kenya’s economy will continue to deteriorate.

He pointed out that aggressive approach is what will save the country.

Mututho made the remarks during the burial of Josphat Mbugua at Milima Mitatu, Turi Ward, in Molo Sub county.

According to him, drugs and substance abuse among young people continues to impact negatively on the nation’s human resource.

“The economic implications of this are clear. We are witnessing a generation of youth who have been made ineffective, and as a result, we are losing out on the potential of a productive workforce,” said Mututho.

He at the same time attributed the numerous fatal road accidents to drunk-driving.

Mututho who currently runs JOMEC Rehabilitation Centre in Nakuru’s Pipeline area, revealed that many long-distance truck drivers are struggling with alcoholism and drug abuse, which has led to an increase in accidents on major roads.

He at the same time took issues with local outlets that are now in the business of selling what he termed deadly concoctions.

These, he said have let to many deaths in communities, adding that to avert such then the government should take action and control the liquor businesses.

“The government must rise up and control the alcohol industry. There are deadly brews being sold in local shops, and this has to stop. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen should wake up local administration officers so that they can be more proactive in tackling illicit brews and drugs in society,” he said.
