“Deeply saddened by the passing of Senator William Cheptumo, a distinguished leader and a good friend. On behalf of the people of Nakuru County and my family, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and our neighbours the people of Baringo County during this difficult time,” she stated.

Governor Kihika lauded the late senator for his wisdom, dignity, and professionalism, noting that he was a leader of integrity who always spoke with measured conviction and remained committed to public service.

“Senator Cheptumo exemplified the very best qualities of leadership with his measured speech, firm conviction, and commitment to serving the people. His dedication to justice, governance, and public service was evident throughout his career, from his days as Baringo North MP to his tenure in the Senate,” she said.

A Life Dedicated to Public Service

Senator William Cheptumo, who passed away while undergoing treatment at the Nairobi Hospital, was a veteran politician and lawyer with a career spanning several decades. Born in 1967, Cheptumo pursued a Bachelor of Laws degree at the University of Nairobi before completing a postgraduate diploma in law at the Kenya School of Law.

His professional career saw him serve as a legal officer at the Industrial and Commercial Development Corporation between 1993 and 1995, and later at the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) from 1995 to 1998. In 1998, he founded Cheptumo and Company Advocates, where he practiced law until 2007.

Cheptumo ventured into politics in 2008 when he was elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Baringo North, a position he held for 14 years until 2022. During his tenure, he championed key development projects in education, infrastructure, and security. He was instrumental in the elevation of Ossen Girls Secondary School to a national school and played a crucial role in the creation of administrative units to enhance governance and security in Baringo.

His commitment to peacebuilding was notable, particularly in the volatile areas of Baringo North and Baringo South sub-counties, where he worked tirelessly to resolve conflicts and bring stability to the region.

William Cheptumo Leadership in Parliament and Senate

As a legislator, Cheptumo served in various parliamentary committees, including:

  • Chairperson of the Committee on Delegated Legislation in the 11th Parliament
  • Member of the Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs
  • House Business Committee and Committee on Pensions
  • Chairperson of the Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs in the 12th Parliament
  • Chairperson of the Senate National Security, Defense, and Foreign Relations Committee in the Senate

In the 2022 General Elections, Cheptumo won the Baringo Senate seat on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket, defeating former senator Gideon Moi with 141,777 votes against Moi’s 71,408 votes. In the Senate, he continued advocating for the interests of his constituents, ensuring development projects were well-funded and executed effectively.

William Cheptumo’s Legacy of Development and Leadership

Beyond politics, Cheptumo was a staunch member of the African Inland Church (AIC) but contributed to the construction of churches of various denominations across Baringo County. His generosity extended to supporting students, young leaders, and vulnerable groups, earning him the admiration of many.

His sudden demise is a great loss not only to his family and the people of Baringo but also to Kenya at large. Governor Kihika emphasized that Cheptumo’s legacy would inspire future leaders to serve with diligence and dedication.

“A tireless champion for development, Hon. Cheptumo worked hard to transform Baringo County, ensuring better representation, improved education, and lasting peace. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of leaders,” Governor Kihika added.

She urged Kenyans to celebrate his life and contributions while offering prayers for his grieving family. “As we mourn this great loss, we also celebrate a life well lived in service to the people. May God grant his family strength and comfort. Rest in peace, my friend. Kenya has lost a patriot.”

Baringo County Opens Condolence Books

In honour of the late senator, former leaders from Baringo, including former MCAs James Cheptoo, Solomon Chemjor, and Richard Kampala, have announced plans to open condolence books at the Governor’s office, the County Assembly, and the County Commissioner’s offices for residents who wish to express their sympathy.

Additionally, Elizabeth Keitany, the Treasurer of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Baringo branch, eulogized Cheptumo as a father figure and a mentor who supported young and experienced leaders alike, regardless of their political affiliations.

Senator William Cheptumo will be remembered as a dedicated leader, a peace champion, and a passionate advocate for development. His passing leaves a void in Kenyan politics, particularly in Baringo County, where his leadership transformed many lives.

As Kenya prepares to bid farewell to this great son of the soil, leaders and citizens alike reflect on the impact he made and the values he upheld. His dedication to public service, his humility, and his unwavering commitment to his people will remain a lasting memory in the hearts of many.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
