Nakuru’s Hyrax Hill Museum and Prehistoric site is one of its kind.
Did you know this is a former farmhouse ceded in 1965 by the late Mr. A. Selfe?
Well, the Tourists’ attraction site is located 4 km from Nakuru Town and 150 km from Nairobi City.
It derives it’s name from presence of numerous hyraxes found living in cracks in the Rocks.
The site lies a walking distance from the Nakuru-Nairobi highway atop Hyrax Hill.
For citizens, one has to part with Ksh 200 for adult and Ksh 100 for those below 16 years as entry fee.
For East Africa residents, entry fee is Ksh 600 for adults and Ksh 400 for those below 16 years.
Non-residents who make a visit, are charged Ksh 1200 for adults and Ksh 600 for children.
Although it was proclaimed a national monument in 1945, it was not until 1965 that it was opened to the public.
In 2019, Hyrax Museum and Prehistoric site under the National Museums of Kenya entered into a memorandum of understanding with the County Government of Nakuru as one way of developing heritage sites.
The MoU opened a new chapter for Hyrax Hill Museum as it is now open for communities to exhibit their cultural activities but under the National Government.
Under the MoU, the expertise in National Museums Kenya can now be channeled down to county as one way of promoting our heritage.
In 2020, the facility celebrated 100 years of Hyrax Hill Museum building that has more information about the site,and it’s features.
Some of the features include; The Sirikwa hollows, The insitu Bao Games, The Neolithic occupations, The Hill crest, The Hill fort, The iron age settlement and The burial moulds.
Many from students to locals walk here to spend holidays but also a moment to learn on early settlements in Kenya and the Great RiftValley.
