Unemployment rate among youths has been cited as one of the major factors contributing to youths engaging in drugs and substance abuse.
Speaking in his office on Monday, John Kimemia Gitau from Rift Valley Institute of Business Studies called on parents to offer guidance to their children as far as courses selection is concerned.
According to Mr. Gitau, poor selection of courses has seen many youth study but end up unemployed upon completing of their studies.
“We should focus on courses that will help our youths earn a living after completing their studies. If we do not do so, the youths will end up doing some courses that do not help them in future hence lead to most of them engaging in drugs” said Gitau.
He challenged parents to make sure their children embrace technical courses being offered in various technical training institutions.
According to the scholar, technical courses have a great impact to learners as they can be self employed hence a boost to the economy.
While reiterating the importance of education in transforming society, Mr.Gitau urged parents to make good use of the education funds set aside by the government.
“Academic papers are good but I think it is high time we focus on technical courses that will see our youths become self employed upon completing their studies. At the moment no parent can say their children cannot study because of lack of finances since the government has allocated bursaries” said Gitau.
