What would you do if your wife served you your lover’s head for dinner?
As a wife, how would you react if your husband admitted he was having an affair with Sylvia? And Sylvia turns out to be a goat?
“The Goat, or who is Sylvia?” is a tale that revolves around Sylvia who is a beautiful lovable goat in the opinion of Martin an accomplished architect.
Other characters in the fast-paced drama include Martin’s wife Stephanie, their gay son Billy and Richard, a journalist who is also Martin’s best friend.
“The Goat, or who is Sylvia?” is an adults’ only drama by Baragumu players that will be running at the Nakuru Players’ Theatre from 3rd of November. The one and half hours long play is an adaptation of a 2002 play by American playwright Edward Albee.
“The Goat, or who is Sylvia?,” is a tale of a married, middle-aged architect, Martin, whose life crumbles when he falls in love with a Sylvia. However, as the play goes on, we discover that Sylvia is not a woman but a goat.
The play focuses on the limits of an ostensibly liberal society. Through showing this family in crisis, the play challenges audience members to question their own morality in the face of other social taboos including infidelity, homosexuality, paedophilia, incest and bestiality.
The Goat, or who is Sylvia?
Martin is an accomplished architect. He has won an award for his work and has also been awarded a tender for the construction of the dry port in Naivasha.
During an interview with TV journalist who also happens to be his oldest friend, Martin is distracted and when Richard seeks to find out the reason, Martin admits he’s in love with Sylvia, a goat.
Richard’s way of breaking the news to Martin’s wife is through a letter. To find out how things play out after that, don’t miss the play on 3rd to 5th November this year.
Baragumu Arts Group
The Baragumu Arts Group which is doing the play has been in existence since the 1990s. The group was initially doing set books but is now doing human interest stories with a play scheduled for each month.
In August, Baragumu Arts Group acted the play, “Have you seen our Husband.” The group also has plays scheduled for for every month
Veteran actor Silas Temba acts as Martin in the play “The Goat, or who is Sylvia?” with Lucy Kafura taking the role of Stephanie who is wife to Martin.
Gaius is in the play as 17-year-old Billy the gay son to the Martins and Ngobia who doubles up as the director acts as Richard the journalist.
Tickets are already on sale. Regular tickets are going for Kshs. 500 and Kshs. 800 for a couple’s ticket
