Residents of Nakuru County on Tuesday joined the World in Marking International Women’s Day with calls on County Government to ensure women space in matters governance.

Speaking when she graced the occasion held at Kabazi’s Assistant County Commissioner’s office grounds in Subukia, National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) Commissioner Ms. Priscilla Nyokabi lauded the County government of Nakuru for coming up with Gender mainstreaming policy.

She added that she will lobby through NGEC to ensure support for the Nakuru Gender mainstreaming policy in Nakuru.

While noting the critical role played by women in society, the former Nyeri Woman Rep called on the county Government of Nakuru to ensure the space of women in matters governance.

“Women play key role in our society and even as Nakuru County we have to ensure their space in matters governance” said Nyokabi.

On matters BBI, Nyokabi who is also part of the expert team in sensitization the public called for inclusivity and ensure that gender issues are taken into considerations.

She appealed to women in Nakuru County and Kenya as a whole to ensure that their voice is heard in the document.

“BBI is for all of us and that is why we are saying gender issues should also be considered in the document” she said.

On his part Nakuru Deputy Governor Dr.Erick Korir reiterating the critical role that women play in the society.

He said the county government of Nakuru will work closely with other partners in ensuring that women are empowered through improving their social economic welfare.

According to the DG, the County Government of Nakuru is finalizing the Gender Policy which will mainstream gender activities in the County.

A Gender Rescue Centre is also being constructed where survivors of gender violence can seek help.

“As a county we are committed to uplifting their welfare by coming up with strategic and bold policies” said Dr.Korir.

The International Women’s Day is marked to not only recognize achievements by women in various fields but also addresses challenges that stand in their way.

The ceremony was also attended by area MP Samuel Gachobe as well as Kabazi MCA Dr.Peter Mbae among others.

Kenyans have been urged to ensure that the ongoing conversations around Building Bridges initiative are issues-centered and not political interests of a few individuals.

Priscilla Nyokabi from National Gender and Equality Commission says the document is good as it contains several recommendations on how to address the challenges facing Kenyans.

The Former Nyeri Women Representative says the document should not be corrupted and that the issues within the document can be implemented in various ways.

According to the Nyokabi who is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, the issues being presented by Kenyans to the BBI team will be dealt with either as per the law, policy and administrative mechanisms.

“We are happy with the ongoing conversations around BBI and we hope the conversation will continue to focus on issues being raised by citizens. The issues can be handled as per the law, policy and through administrative mechanisms” said Nyokabi.

And with the last sensitization meeting of BBI expected to be held in Nakuru on 21st March, Nyokabi has appealed to politicians to also give their views without biasness.

She says politicians should avoid distracting the real course of the BBI rally which is meant to help address the challenges facing Kenyans.

“Politicians too have the opportunity to air their views but they should avoid distracting the whole process” she said.

This even as Rift Valley leaders allied to Deputy President William Ruto have softened their hard-line stance against the Building Bridges Initiative in preparation for the BBI meeting in Nakuru.

The leaders have agreed to host former premier Raila Odinga and welcome any other leader who wants to attend the meeting slated for March 21 at Afraha Stadium.

On Friday night under the leadership of Governor Lee Kinyanjui, the leaders backed down on their demands and pledged to cooperate.

Addressing journalists outside the governor’s private office at Milimani estate, the leaders pledged not to make remarks that could cause chaos in the region considered Ruto’s political turf.

Leaders present were Senators Susan Kihika and Victor Prengei, MPs Kimani Ngunjiri (Bahati), Martha Wangari (Gilgil), Charity Kathambi (Njoro), Sammy Seroney (Nominated), Samuel Gachobe (Subukia), Joseph Tonui (Kuresoi South) and Woman Rep Liza Chelule.

The legislators vowed to present a united front at the rally which will incorporate 10 other counties from the Rift Valley region.
