Institutions lauded for their contribution towards innovation in agriculture

The government is committed towards exploring the use of innovation and technology in boosting agriculture sector.

Speaking on Friday at the ongoing Nakuru National Agricultural show, Water Cabinet Secretary Simon Chelugui lauded the various institutions that are banking on innovation to boost agriculture in the country.

Chelugui who represented his Agriculture counterpart Mwangi Kiunjurui at the third day of the Nakuru National ASK show reiterated the government’s commitment in the use of innovation and technology in promoting agriculture and trade.

“The learning institutions in this region are doing a lot to promote new technology in crops and other agricultural products and we laud them. As a government we shall continue to support such initiatives towards boosting agriculture” said Chelugui.

The Water CS also lauding Research Institutions in the Country led by Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization for coming up with new seeds.

According to the CS such seeds should be embraced by farmers especially in regions that are highly affected by drought and other climate change conditions.

He called on the farmers in the region and nation at large to make good use of the Agricultural shows as an opportunity to learn more on new innovative ways of farming.

The CS also challenging farmers to use their land in a very economical way by embracing mixed farming.

On the recent revival of Pyrethrum, the Water CS commended the County Government of Nakuru and other stakeholders involved.He assured the farmers that the government was working to see to it that the Pyrethrum Board of Kenya is revived.

“The seeds that are being developed through research are all brought out in one show like this and we call on farmers to make use of the opportunity to learn and also embrace mixed farming. I am also happy that pyrethrum is now doing well in this region and I commend the county government even as we put in efforts to ensure revival of the Board” he said.

The CS was welcomed by Nakuru CECM for Agriculture Dr.Immaculate Maina and Nakuru ASK show chairperson Ms Margaret Anami among other officials.

The Nakuru National Agricultural Show that commenced on 3rd is expected to come to an end on Sunday 7th July 2019.
