Maai Mahiu is a semi arid area in Naivasha Sub-County in Nakuru County. Most of the drinking water used in the area comes from Uplands in Kiambu County. Following the disconnection of water going to Maai Mahiu by the Kiambu County Government, the Nakuru County Senator on Saturday issued the following statement.
It has come to my attention that Kiambu County Government through its County Executive Member responsible for water and the Kijabe ward MCA, Nyutu Wamwere on Wednesday 31st January 2018 disconnected water that has been flowing from Magina in Lari constituency of Kiambu County to serve Maai Mahiu residents for the last two years.
As you are aware, water is a natural resource which under our constitution has to be accessed by residents of any county without respect to boundaries. This has been the case in the Lari-Maai Mahiu water connection. Maai mahiu is a semi-arid area of Nakuru County and water is an extremely important resource for the survival of people living, visiting and doing business there. Limuru water and Sewerage Company, which has since been dissolved into Kiambu Water and Sewerage Company, under which this waterfalls gave authority for the water connection to flow into maai mahiu.
The best the Kiambu County Government could have done was to call for a review of the terms of the water connection before this abrupt disconnection which appears hurried and insensitive to the plight of Maai Mahiu people.
Together with the area Member of Parliament and other local leaders, I will initiate talks between the two counties to ensure the water connection is restored for the Maai Mahiu people to enjoy this important resource.
I call upon the Governor for Kiambu, H.E. Ferdinard Waititu to consider the human needs of the Maai mahiu people and allow the reconnection of this water as talks on the terms and conditions of sharing water from Kiambu County are held.
