Senator Susan Kihika has continued with her push for leaders to give bursaries to students without discrimination.
While addressing students, teachers and parents at St. Francis secondary school in Lare, Njoro Sub-County, the senator said those responsible for giving bursaries should differentiate between bursaries and scholarships.
“We can’t continue denying deserving students bursaries on the excuse that they didn’t score above C-. Bursaries should be given to every needy student, unlike scholarships which are given to star students. These are the people’s taxes and every needy student should be considered. Do we want those poor performers to just stay at home and turn them into criminals?” wondered the senator.
Senator Kihika was addressing the audience that also included the school staff and old students during an occasion to reward top performers in the 2017 exams. The senator was the guest of honour.
Despite being a day school, St. Francis school Lari, is one of the leading schools in Nakuru county and it emerged position two in the 2017 KCSE exams in Nakuru county.
In her address, the senator praised the area, MP Hon. Charity Kathambi who has in this year alone given students in the school over 500,000 in bursary.
“I must appreciate our MP who has been very supportive of the school and the students. Am happy that she has not denied the school bursaries due to the fact that its a day school,” said the Senator.
A few weeks back during the launch of a students’ association in Kivumbini, the senator faulted the Nakuru County Government for denying bursaries to both day scholars and those whose performance was below C minus.
“Almost all the children in our Day Schools in the county are residents of Nakuru County. Why do we then continue punishing them,” she wondered.
Also present during the prize giving which also marked the celebration of 29 years since the school was set up was area MCA Phillip Wanjohi who served in the school for 24 years.
The mass which preceded the thanksgiving was led by Bishop Rt. Revered Maurice Muhatia of Nakuru Diocese.
Together with Hon. Kathambi, the senator donated sanitary towels to the girls and a copy printer to help in printing of exams. The two leaders visited Taita Mauche secondary school where they also donated goods to the students.
