PS Mary Muthoni Calls on Kenyans to Uphold Food Safety and Hygiene During Festive Season

The Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni has called on Kenyans to ensure that all meat consumed during the festive season is properly inspected and certified fit for human consumption.

She cautioned that consuming uninspected meat poses serious health risks, including foodborne diseases, and urged vigilance among both consumers and traders.

The PS further appealed to parents to closely monitor their children during the long school holidays to help prevent drug abuse and teenage pregnancies, while encouraging communities to maintain high hygiene standards by clearing overgrown grass and stagnant water to curb the spread of cholera and malaria.

Mrs Muthoni also encourages residents to register with the Social Health Authority (SHA) to access quality and specialised healthcare when needed, warning against self-medication, which contributes to antimicrobial resistance.

She made the remarks in Ishiara, Mbeere North, Embu County, during a development tour led by Governor Cecily Mbarire, where officials from various state agencies engaged traders and residents at Ishiara Market.
