Political leaders urged to be peace ambassadors

Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof Kithure Kindiki has reiterated the need for collective responsibility towards ensuring peace and stability in conflict-prone areas.

The CS noted that sustainable peace and security in conflict-prone regions of the Country requires the input and participation of all agencies and stakeholders.

Speaking after holding meeting with security team in Turkana County, Kindiki called on Political leaders to also up in ensuring peaceful coexisting.

“Political leaders are crucial stakeholders and can be effective catalysts for change and building a culture of peace and a violence-free society,” he stated.

According to him, the significant pacification of Turkana through the kinetic operations of the past one year provides a good point to start multi-agency, multi-stakeholder peace building and sustainability programs.

The CS earlier on Thursday March 28,2024 while at Lodwar, finalized the consultative forum with Members of Parliament from Turkana County.

“Agreed, inter alia, on the need for the relevant Constituency Development Fund Committees to facilitate support for infrastructure projects to allow speedy operationalization of the already gazetted administrative units to enhance security and to bring critical Government services closer to the people,” said Kindiki.

Meanwhile, the security situation in Turkana County has considerably improved since the commencement of Operation Maliza Uhalifu a year ago.

The CS noted that the recruitment, training and deployment of National Police Reservists (NPRs) has significantly augmented the efforts of the formed up units of the security agencies and resulted to normalcy on the Kitale-Lodwar Highway and several other areas within Turkana County that were experiencing insecurity.

However, occasional attacks in the areas contiguous to the Turkana-West Pokot border and at a few points near Kenya’s border with Uganda and South Sudan remains an outstanding assignment which the Government aims at addressing.

To generate appropriate interventions for completing the task, the CS held a status of County Security Appraisal Forum with the Turkana County Security and Intelligence Agency Heads at Lodwar Town.
