The Nakuru County Government has launched the County Improved local chicken stimulus project aimed at distributing 29,700 hens and cockerels to poultry farmers across the county.
In the first phase of the project, four farmer groups in Molo Sub County received 3,850 local improved chicken from the county’s department of livestock.
The County is seeking to invest a total of Ksh 16 million in the project which is is geared towards providing improved chicken breeds to poultry farmers.
Speaking when she launched the project, Ag. Livestock Director, Ms. Virginia Ngunjiri, urged the group members to ensure proper pest and disease control by following the vaccination schedules provided for by the extension officers.
The County Government also distributed 5,000 chicks to groups in Njoro Sub County
Through its Ministry of agriculture, the county is also carrying out capacity training workshops for poultry farmers in a bid to enhance and monetize poultry farming.
The Department is also engaged in other projects including the distribution of quality bulls to farmers
The project aims at bettering both beef and milk production in rural areas as well as increasing production of the two products to commercial levels.
Through the projects the county targets at pulling more people into farming as a way of creating employment opportunities and fighting poverty.
