Nakuru hosts national event to mark World Teachers’ Day with calls for better welfare for teachers

Calls for better welfare for teachers took centre stage during this year’s national event to mark World Teachers’ Day with Nakuru County playing host.

This year’s 30th World Teachers’ Day national celebrations held in Nakuru were organized by the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) under the theme ‘Valuing Teachers’ Voices’.

Speaking during the event, Cabinet Secretary for Education Julius Migos reiterated the government’s commitment towards supporting teachers.

The CS lauded the steps taken by teachers and other stakeholders in ensuring better implementation of Competence Based Curriculum.

In his speech, the CS also emphasized the crucial role teachers play in building a sustainable society through quality, equitable education.

He urged all stakeholders to support Government agenda on education.

Sentiments echoed by Collins Oyoo, Secretary General of the Kenya National Union of Teachers.

While recognizing the vital role teachers play in shaping the future of the country, he stated that the Union will support any initiatives advocating for better education.

The event was also graced by Nakuru County Executive Committee Member for Education Zipporah Wambui.

In her speech, she appreciated teachers for their various noble roles in the classroom, building a safe and conducive learning environment, and mentoring and nurturing pupils as they shape the future of our nation.

The CECM also mentioned that the administration of Governor Susan Kihika has adopted an open-door policy to allow teachers to carry out their work effectively.

“In this regard, the county has held meetings with teachers’ representatives periodically to discuss the best ways to improve educational standards in Nakuru County,” she said.
