Nakuru County Department of Water, Energy, Environment, Climate Change, and Natural Resources joined the global community in commemorating the International Day of Forests under the theme “Forest and Innovation: New Solutions for a Better World.”
The annual event is observed on March 21 with an aim of raising awareness about the importance of forests and encourages efforts to protect and preserve them.
The International Day of Forests serves as a platform for local, national, and international initiatives focused on activities such as tree planting campaigns and clean-up exercises.
Nakuru County, recognizing the significance of this occasion, organized a series of impactful events centered around River Njoro, with a special emphasis on raising awareness among communities living along its riparian lands.
Environment Director, Grace Karanja, graced the event and led the journey along the Water- River Njoro edition, which served as a sensitization campaign for local communities. The activities included water testing, tree planting, and a clean-up exercise at Barut Ward in Nakuru Town West Sub-county.
“We are committed to safeguarding the riparian lands along the Njoro River, not just on International Day of Forests but as part of our regular efforts. Our goal is to work on the 5km stretch of the River Njoro from Ngata/Kerma area in Njoro to Mogoon area in Barut,” stated Director Karanja.
Present were various partners, including Environment officers, the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF), Kenya Water Ambassadors, KENAWRUA, Water Resources Management Authority, Youth Bunge Forum, Water Resources Authority, Kenya Prison, and ward climate change committees.
