Bar owners in Nakuru have called on government to stop using the crackdown on illicit liquor to harass genuine traders.
The traders drawn from various sub Counties have faulted decision taken by local administrators to shut down several bars in Nakuru West, Naivasha and Gilgil sub-counties.
Addressing Journalists in Nakuru, the bar owners said they are not opposed to directive issued by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki concerning illicit brew.
Steve Wekesa- Chairperson Bar Owners in Njoro Sub-County said the closure of their businesses has led to a lot of suffering as many of them rely on the businesses for school fees and welfare of their families.
He added that majority of bar owners have gone into depression due to the fact that they had active loans which are yet to be paid, hence the shut down of their businesses is a big blow.
Wekesa called on Governor Susan Kihika to intervene into the matter as liquor sector has continued to create job opportunities and revenue for the county.
“Let Governor Kihika listen to our cry and talk to CS Kindiki over the issue,” he said.
Sentiments echoed by Damaris Wangui from Barnabas.
She says the crackdown should focus on illicit brewers and second generation liquor rather than harassing legit businesses.
Wangui called on police and local administrators to rethink their actions.
“We have suffered a lot through the ongoing crackdown. What worries us is that it is happening on even legal outlets yet we have paid licenses,” she said.
Bar, Hotels and Liquor Traders Association national Secretary General Boniface Gachoka in a rejoinder, faulted the move to shut down licensed outlets.
According to him, the regulations and directive by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and CS Kithure Kindiki are being misused by a section of individuals.
He added that, whatever is happening in Nakuru is against the law.
Gachoka is now calling on the crackdown to be inclusive officers from county government.
The Association is also pushing to have a meeting with county security team led by County Commissioner and County Police Commander.
“Whatever is happening in Nakuru is uncalled for and that is why as BAHLITA we are seeking to have a meeting with county commissioner and police commander so that we can help address the issue,” said Gachoka.
