Nakuru Town West MP Samwel Arama wants a smooth relationship between Kenya Wildlife Service officers from Lake Nakuru National Park and the locals bordering the Park.
Arama who spoke during a crucial meeting with KWS, locals and county government officials, regretted that the locals were still experiencing harrasment in the hands of officers from KWS.
He added that it was wrong for officers to harass innocent locals in the name of illegal fishing.
Arama who had earlier held a closed door meeting with top officials of the National Park, revealed that the operation against illegal fish was an order from National Government and the officers had nothing but to act on.
The Lawmaker was however quick to question why Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen had allowed such operation that has seen several innocent locals harassed in the hands of KWS.
According to him, this was contrary to the earlier agreement that all those arrested because of illegal fishing were to be released unconditionally.
The third term serving Legislator vowed to seek answers from CS Murkomen on the matter.
Arama has been of the opinion that illegal fishing in Lake Nakuru should not be a bone of contention between KWS officers and the locals.
He argues that not all those in the fishing industry should be condemned as some get their stock from Kisumu and Naivasha.
“You can’t just go around harassing and arresting everyone selling fish in the name of they are from Lake Nakuru, some of these traders get their fish from as far as Kisumu. I think some of the orders should be re-looked at,” stated Arama.
