Following the alarming rise in Road Accidents in the country, Nakuru-based MIDRIFT HURINET on Thursday April 18 held an engagement forum with Nakuru county transport sector stakeholders to discuss the emerging security threats in the sector.
The forum brought together human right defenders, Nakuru County Government – Official, The Civil Society Organizations Network and Bodaboda operators from all the 11 sub-counties of Nakuru.
According to MIDRIFT HURINET, the meeting was to enhance accountability by both state and non state actors in road safety, as well as violence prevention.
The stakeholders identified lack of foot bridges, roadsigns, zebra crossing and unmarked roads as the main causes of accidents in Nakuru.
The Nakuru County Government – Official CECM for Roads, transport and infrastructure, Engineer Kamau called upon the members to write official memos directed to relevant stakeholders which will then facilitate the identified issues.
“Attending such meetings is not enough. You need to follow up with these matters until their completion. As county government we are committed to having safe roads in the county,” he stated.
The CECM added that this week, the County Government launched the first training of residents helping children & the elderly cross roads in labelled hotspots.
According to the CECM, they will be equipped with knowledge on road usage and first aid to facilitate their response when accidents occur.
The forum was supported by Act Change Transform through Embassy of Denmark in Kenya and Somalia under the Resilience, Peace and Stability program.
