Menengai Forest will to receive 55 km Solar Electric Fence.
In a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday April 8, 2024, the Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) Alex Lemarkoko led the launch of a solar electric fencing project for the Menengai Forest Block in Nakuru County.
The 55 km fence, costing Ksh106 million, will cover 6,014 hectares of forest land and is supported by the GreenZones Development Support Project Phase II.
The CCF noted that the primary beneficiaries will be the local community, who will enjoy unquantifiable benefits.
Nakuru County will also benefit from recreational services for the urban population, as well as enhanced biodiversity for both flora and fauna from the natural regeneration of the forest.
Addressing challenges in housing for forest rangers, the CCF noted that he had earlier launched ranger houses in Molo, Baraget, and Elburgon and called for more stakeholder support to ensure rangers have better living conditions.
The increased patrols arising from the rangers will provide security for visitors and forest-adjacent communities.
The fence, expected to be installed within 8 months, will be equipped with perimeter patrol and intelligence software to monitor fence inspections, and the contractor will provide training on basic maintenance.
The County and National Government, together with Kenya Forest Service will work to ensure clear border demarcation and a clean fence line.
Green Zones project is supported by the African Development Bank through the GreenZones Development Support Project Phase II, which has also provided income-generating activities for the community such as bee keeping, fruit orchards and fish farming.
The Fencing Project is compliant with environmental regulations and is expected to aid in controlled grazing, provide perimeter patrols, and enhance the overall management and conservation of the Menengai Forest Block.
The CCF was joined by County Commissioner, Commandant, GZDSP Project Manager, CFC Nakuru, Menengai CFA and other KFS officials.
