MCA wants law on hiring ECDE teachers amended

Kivumbini Ward MCA Wilbur Onyango has called on the County government of Nakuru and National Government to revisit the law on hiring Early Childhood Education teachers.

Addressing media in Nakuru Town, the MCA decried that there are many ECDE teachers who have been practicing but their grade is below D+ which a requirement by the law.

According to the MCA this has been a stumbling block towards hiring ECDE teachers and should be addressed as it is blocking many of them to be employed by the county government of Nakuru.

He says his ward has only benefited to get 3 teachers during the last hiring by County government of Nakuru.

The first time MCA now says they will be pushing the matter at the county assembly to see to it that it is addressed.

“Many ECDE teachers have been practicing and are experienced but when it comes to employment they are locked out simply because the law requires a D+ grade yet they have a lower one. This is a matter that should be looked into since we have shortage in our schools” he said.

The MCA adding that they are working closely with the county’s executive to see to it that there is conducive atmosphere for ECDE centres.

Already the county government of Nakuru is working on a program that will see all children in ECDE centers get a cup of porridge daily while in school.

“ECDE is fully devolved and that is why we are working to refurbish all centres. We also working on program to have kids served porridge while in school” said MCA Onyango.

Early this year the County government of Nakuru engaged the services of more than 300 teachers.

This was a relief to parents who were shouldering the burden of employing ECDE teachers to serve in the centres which are critical in the education sector.

The county government deployed 350 teachers employed under permanent and pensionable terms unlike their predecessors who had been operating under contracts with parents and schools operating the ECDE centres.

According to Deputy Governor Dr.Erick Korir the county has 939 registered ECDE centres, majority of which do not have teachers.
