KMPDU mourns Dr. Laban  Langat, calls for thorough investigations into incident

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has termed the death of Dr.Laban Langat a big loss to the medical fraternity.
In a statement to newsrooms, the Doctors’ Union expressed their sorrow following the tragic death of Laban whom until his demise was a medical officer intern at Nakuru County Referral and Teaching Hospital(PGH).
“KMPDU is deeply saddened by the tragic death of Dr. Laban Langat, a medical officer intern at Nakuru County
Referral and Teaching Hospital (PGH),” reads part of the statement.
Dr. Langat’s lifeless body was discovered in the trenches outside the Margaret Kenyatta Mother and Baby Wing on the morning of January 13, 2024.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Dr. Laban Langat during this difficult time. His untimely demise is a profound loss to the medical fraternity, and our thoughts and prayers are with those affected,” the statement indicates.
According to KMPDU’s Secretary General Dr.Davji Atellah, the loss of a young doctor like Dr. Langat is a devastating blow to healthcare system.
“He represented the future of our profession, and his tragic demise reverberates through the entire medical fraternity,” stated Atellah.
He noted that the circumstances surrounding Dr. Langat’s death are shrouded in mystery.
For this reason, KMPDU has called for immediate and thorough investigations to establish cause of death.
“As KMPDU,  we call for an immediate and thorough investigation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to establish the cause of his death. We implore the relevant authorities to
expedite the process, ensuring that justice is served swiftly,” stated Atellah.
KMPDU further states that the unfortunate incident underscores the pressing need for heightened security measures within medical facilities.
“We demand that county governments and hospital management prioritize the safety of healthcare workers, particularly medical interns. It is imperative that hospitals adhere to KMPDC and PPB rules, including providing secure housing within hospital premises for medical interns,”.
The union has vowed not to tolerate any compromise in the security of doctors and medical interns.
KMPDU is also calling on authorities to take swift action to ensure that such incidents do not recur in the future.
“The safety of healthcare workers is paramount in delivering quality patient care and maintaining the integrity of our healthcare system.KMPDU is committed to collaborating with relevant stakeholders to unravel the circumstances surrounding Dr. Langat’s death and to hold accountable anyone found culpable of foul play.”
