Kathambi calls on Agriculture Ministry to ensure safety of Kenyans against harmful pesticides

Njoro Member of Parliament Charity Kathambi has called on Ministry of Agriculture to ensure Kenyans are safe from harmful pesticides.

The Lawmaker decried that Kenyans might be consuming chemicals without their knowledge.

Speaking in Parliament when she sought Ministerial statement on the same, Kathambi wondered why the ban on 365 pesticides was in place but only 77 had been removed from the market.

In a quick rejoinder, Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe assured that all measures were in place and that a review was on for the other harmful pesticides.

The CS assured Kenyans that no harmful pesticides will be allowed in the country.

It should be noted that the Kenyan Ministry of in mid-2025, announced the withdrawal of 77 end-use pesticide products and imposed restrictions on an additional 202 products over safety concerns.
Another 151 products were placed under scientific review, with a decision expected by December 2025.
The regulatory action was prompted by a comprehensive review conducted by the Pest Control Products Board (PCPB) to ensure the safety of products for human health and the environment.
Many of the banned and restricted products contain active ingredients that are classified as highly hazardous by the World Health Organization (WHO) and are already prohibited in other jurisdictions, such as the European Union.

The government also introduced the Business Laws (Amendment) Act, 2024, which aims to prevent the import or use of pesticides that have been withdrawn or restricted in their countries of origin.
