Fourteen people perished on Jamhuri Day in a multiple road accident involving thirteen vehicles at Sachangwan black spot in Molo.
Addressing media, Nakuru county police Commander Hassan Rashid Barua said the 11.00am accident along Nakuru- Eldoret highway claimed thirteen lives on the spot while one child died at Nakuru level four hospital.
“The 11.00am accident along Nakuru- Eldoret highway claimed thirteen lives on the spot while one child died at Nakuru level four hospital. A truck that was headed to Nakuru town from Eldoret rammed into twelve other vehicles after its brakes failed”he said.
The ill fated truck was transporting salt from Eldoret to Nakuru.
The county police Commander added that police officers arrived at the scene immediately and started rescuing passengers who had been trapped in the wreckage.
While confirming that that casualties were rushed to Molo level four hospital while others rushed to Nakuru level five hospital, he called on drivers to be extra careful during the festive season.
He said that police officer have been directed to be firm on those flouting traffic rules.
At the accident scene a heavy traffic jam was witnessed as shocked members of the public milled around.
Luggage belonging to passengers who were aboard the thirteen vehicles lay scattered as Kenya Red Cross official with the help of police collected bodies in body bags.
All the bodies were taken to Molo level four hospital mortuaries and though police have put the official death toll at thirteen, eye witnesses said that the number could be more.
When asked to confirm reports that a vehicle belonging to the National Transport and safety authority- NTSA vehicle was pursuing the truck, Barua said that the matter was under investigations.
Initially, eye witnesses said that the NTSA vehicle was to blame for the accident ass it was spotted following the truck at a high speed.
The accident comes barely on day after another accident claimed 14 lives in Kamukuywa Bungoma county.
All the vehicles were towed to Molo police station.
President Uhuru Kenyatta in his address to the nation during Jamhuri Day celebrations at Kasarani called on drivers to be extra careful on the roads during the festive season.
He further directed traffic police officers to firmly enforce traffic rules.
