CSOs call for investigations into alleged threats issued against Senator Kihika

A network of 25 CSOs working in Kenya on human rights has called on Inspector General of Police to investigate the allegations of threats being issued against Nakuru Senator Kihika for playing her constitutional role in ensuring the rights of women and girls are safeguarded through the Reproductive Health Bill.

Addressing media in Nairobi on Sunday led by Nelly Munyasia from Reproductive Health Network Kenya, the CSOs said they will not allow such threats.

“Specifically, we condemn the threats that are allegedly being issued against the life of Senator Susan Kihika who has taken the bold step of working on legislation on reproductive health and rights. We call on Inspector General of Police to investigate the allegations of threats being issued against Nakuru Senator Kihika for playing her constitutional role” said Munyasia.

The CSOs have also condemned threats and harassment against human rights defenders working with state institutions to ensure full enjoyment of Sexual Reproductive Health Rights in the country.

The Network of 25 CSOs has also invited the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) to probe and hold to account all peddlers of misinformation on Sexual and Reproductive Health as this constitutes a violation of the right to freedom of expression and access to information.

The Network includes Amnesty International Kenya,ANMA Kenya,Bunge la Wamama Mashinani,Center for Reproductive Rights,Centre for Study of Adolescence Kenya,Defenders Coalition,Deutsche Stiftung Weltbevolkerung (DSW Kenya),Epic Youth Group,The African Women’s Development and Communication Network (FEMNET ),The Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA Kenya).

Others are Grassroots Women Initiative Network Kenya,Ipas Africa Alliance,Kenya Ethical and Legal Issues Network on HIV & AIDS,Kenya Obstetricians and Gynecologists Society,MAMA Network,Mid Rift Human Rights Network,Network of Adolescents and Youth in Africa,Planned Parenthood Global,Reproductive and Maternal Health Coalition,Reproductive Health Network Kenya,Reproductive Health Services,SheDecides Kenya,Trust for Indigenous Culture and Health,WA-WA, Homabay,Youth Health Organization.
