IDPs lobby group claim ‘powerful individuals’ derailing their resettlement

Kenya National Internally Displaced Persons Network now claims a section of powerful individuals within Government and those who served in the previous Government are out to derail the Kenya Kwanza efforts to resettle 2007/2008 post election IDPs.

Through Patron Peter Tena,  the Network said that government’s programme to resettle affected persons seems to be infiltrated by self-interest individuals.

While lauding the Kenya Kwanza Government’s efforts towards ensuring all IDPs are resettled, Tena called on President William Ruto and his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua to ensure the process is completed as had been their wish.

“We are calling on President William Ruto and his Deputy to ensure all the good plans they had for IDPs in terms of resettlement are fulfilled,” he said.

Addressing a press conference in Nakuru on Saturday, Tena revealed that on May 18, 2024, the first batch of 3000 IDPs will be resettled.

He expressed optimism that the Kenya Kwanza Government will see the process sail through smoothly.

According to Tena, National Consultative Committee that was to spearhead the process was disbanded hence anyone who was within the committee and are within the government should be shown the door.

He cited a number of parcel of land that were to be for resettling the IDPs but there are some individuals who are messing up with the process of subdivisions.

“We have some people at national level who are interfering with the process and that is why we are calling on President to take actions,” he said.

Sentiments echoed by Eunice Wangari who stated that IDPs have waited for long on the resettlement issue.

She says they expected to be resettled as at last year, but this has not materialized.

“What is it that normally happens when it comes to resettlement of IDPs? Our plea is that we be resettled,” she said.

Harrison Kariuki on his part noted that there have been a lot of obstacles toward resettlement of IDPs.

According to Kariuki, with the ongoing heavy rains, the IDPs are much affected as they have no land.

Kariuki called on the government to wipe out the cartels who have been derailing the process of resettlement of IDPs.

“We call on our President to ensure no more cartels when it comes to the process of resettling IDPs,” he said.
