How lack of access to sanitary pads as a girl prompted Rose Omango to develop passion for community work

Rose Omango is a woman with passion to serve the community through activities that transform livelihoods.

Though born in Kisii County, she chose Eldama-Ravine as her second home.

On March 15, 2024,  famousnakuru.co.ke caught up with her during an activity of HEART Africa Organization in partnership with Rotary Club at St.Patrick Day Secondary School in Eldama-Ravine, Baringo County.

In an interview, she reveals that she began the journey of community work sometimes back as a mentor and menstrual hygiene champion besides being a business woman.

As a way of giving back to the community, in 2019 she decided to start a Non-governmental organization dubbed Oasis for Vulnerable Group.

She has been using the NGO to serve the communities in Baringo County in various sectors.

Just as her name suggests the aroma and love related to Rose flowers, Ms Rose has been showing a lot of love to vulnerable girls in rural areas through a project ‘Menstrual hygiene management’.

“Since 2019, we have been doing great work in the community but our flagship project remains Menstrual Hygiene Management which is very close to my heart,” she said.

She says that while growing up as a young girl, she had difficulty in accessing sanitary pads.

This prompted her to start thinking out of the box and it is here that she made up her mind that when she grows up, she will do something in the community to help young girls.

True to her word, this is how Oasis for Vulnerable Group was birthed.

According to Rose, the NGO is now serving 3 counties; Baringo, Laikipia, Machakos but with more focus in Baringo where she says the need is huge.

She points out that though sanitary pads is essential need, in Baringo county most girls are vulnerable as the pads are treated as secondary.

Rose reveals that since 2019, they have been able to reach over 6000 vulnerable girls with sanitary pads.

“We started with disposable pads but then with technology we switched to washable ones which we purchase from companies,” she said.

Their continued support from charity organizations such as Me To You Charity, has also enabled the NGO to go on with boosted muscles in reaching out to more women and girls.

She adds that with more partnerships, then vulnerable girls in Baringo will have a reason to smile as they will not miss school due during their menstruation.

Currently, Rose is the President-elect of the newly formed Rotary Club of Eldama-Ravine.

She says having done several community work, she knew joining Rotary Club would be a plus to her.

Rose is among the first members of Rotary Club of Eldama-Ravine that was chartered in 2020 being the newest Club and the only one in Baringo County.

She has also served in various positions of the Club before she became President elect, meaning in July, 2024 she will take up the leadership mantle at the Club.

Rose has a background in Undergraduate Business Management-Marketing option, Masters in Project Planning and Management.

She is currently pursuing Doctorate in Business Administration.

Recently, the Open Christian University honoured her with Doctorate for her community and humanitarian work.

With this background, she believes that Rotary Club of Eldama-Ravine that is a baby of Rotary Club of Nakuru, will soar higher.

“I am proud to be a member of Rotary Club of Eldama-Ravine and as the President-elect, I look forward to work closely with other members in making the club strong,. I foresee a situation where the club shall grow and enroll professionals here to become members” she said.
