Governor Kihika meets GDC team over emerging issues affecting local communities around Menengai Crater

Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika on Friday September 26 met a team from Geothermal Development Company led by Managing Director Mr Paul Ngugi to asses emerging issues affecting the local communities around Menengai Crater.

It should be noted that the parastatal is preparing to embark on the third phase of geothermal exploration at the Menengai geothermal fields in Menengai, Rongai, Nakuru County.

“While we are proud that the exploitation of geothermal potential in our county—both at Olkaria and Menengai—is rapidly positioning Nakuru as a regional economic hub, we are aware that the geothermal resource is deeply rooted in our local context. This resource must deliver tangible benefits to our people, communities, and economy,” she stated.

Kihika affirmed her commitment to safeguard the interests of the local community by including them in consultative processes, balancing the need to harness geothermal potential with the welfare, land rights, and safety of the local community in Menengai West and surrounding areas in Subukia and Bahati subcounties,” she stated.

She added that they will tour the proposed site in the next two weeks as part of the consultative process.

The meeting was also attended by MPs Paul Chebor, Samuel Gachobe, and David Gikaria; MCAs Isaac Rotok and George Talam; Chief of Staff Peter Ketyenya; CECs Nelson Maara and John Kihagi; and Chief Officer Kamau Kuria.
