Governor Kihika Champions Public Participation for Effective Governance, Development

Governor Susan Kihika has emphasized the importance of incorporating diverse perspectives in government pronouncements and development agendas to enhance decision-making and meet the needs of the general public.

She stated that actively involving the public in decision-making processes would establish a framework for her administration to be more accountable and fulfill a wide range of development proposals in her manifesto.

“The law requires the government to consult the electorate in its key decision-making processes. My government will continue to engage residents as necessary, as all sovereign power belongs to them,” she stated.

During her recent State of the County Address, the Governor highlighted that the Department of Public Participation and Citizen Engagement organized over 74 public engagement activities in 2023.

The public actively participated in the formulation of county budgets, the approval of County Fiscal Strategy Papers, the formulation of frameworks for development, and the creation of various bills.

Currently, the County is developing and improving targeted policies and plans that will assist the administration in achieving its objectives in an efficient, timely, structured, and defined manner.

Some of the policies soon to be presented to the County Assembly of Nakuru for consideration include the Water and Sanitation Policy, which will outline the County’s approach to providing clean water and sanitation services.

The Food Safety Policy will ensure the safety and quality of the food supply chain, safeguard public health, promote consumer confidence, and establish a framework for regulating and overseeing the food industry.

The County Health Contingency Plan and Health Management Policy will be crucial in ensuring a well-coordinated, responsive, and sustainable healthcare system that contributes to the overall public well-being.

The Lake Naivasha Fisheries Management Plan will ensure the responsible and sustainable management of fisheries resources, maintain ecological balance, support local livelihoods, and prevent overexploitation.

To enhance governance structures, the Governor has ensured the establishment of all statutory committees responsible for urban and health facilities management.

“I urge every one of us to focus on the work ahead and build on the successes of the past years. Our unity is a confirmed ticket to prosperity as a people. We all share a common destiny,” she said.

Her administration is also in the process of establishing an audit committee to ensure the financial integrity and effectiveness of projects and other deliverables.
