Government committed to ensure food security,says Agriculture CS

The government has reiterated commitment to ensure food security through a system of pulling together small scale farmers.
Speaking in Nakuru on Thursday when he officially opened a two days conference on Fodder value chain, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Willy Bett said the move is paramount towards making Kenya Food secure.
“The government is working towards making Kenya food secure through value addition by pulling the production together” he said.
In order to achieve quality fodder for the dairy famrers, the CS stated that the government has commenced a capacity building program that will see farmers empowered with the right knowledge on the same.
He said the government will ensure farmers have certified seeds for the production of fodder for the animals.
“As a country we have never achieved quality fodder and the only way to achieve is by bringing together the small scale famers and capacity build them but the most important is certified seeds” he said.
While noting the potential of county governments, the CS categorically stated that the National government will continue to partner with the counties in ensuring capacity building.
He however called on various counties to ensure they maximize on their potential in ensuring quality production in various agricultural sectors.
“We are working with the county governments to ensure that we build capacity. We are also encouraging the county governments to be proactive in ensuring quality production” he said.
The two days workshop is attended by farmers from various counties across the country and will come to a close on Friday.
