Good News for Women in Agriculture as Nakuru County cements partnership with Ireland

Women in Agriculture in Nakuru County have a reason to smile after county government cemented Partnership with Ireland on matters Agriculture.

This was revealed on Monday April 22, 2024 when Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika hosted the Ambassador of Ireland to Kenya, Caitriona Ingoldsby in her office at the County Headquarters in Nakuru.

Governor Kihika lauded the cordial relations that exist between Nakuru County and the Embassy of Ireland supported by years of partnerships in Agriculture and other sectors.

She also lauded the contribution towards food security in Nakuru County by the Government of Ireland through it’s Sustainable Food Systems project through which Ireland is supporting research and policy work in agriculture and livestock development with a special focus of potato and dairy value chains which are a key crops in Nakuru.

While acknowledging the steps taken towards the promotion of two value chains, Governor Kihika urged the Ambassador to focus on developing new potato seed varieties, processors, agri-chemical firms, finance institutions and extension services to support potato farming.

In regard to dairy, the Governor emphasized the need to lower the cost of animal feeds, types of cows in relation to feed ratios and investment in a dairy processor in Nakuru which now leads in milk production in the country.

Ambassador Ingoldsby said Ireland and Kenya share a lot of commonalities, emphasizing the need of using technology and new research outcomes to improve productivity in the face of climate change.

She also promised to work with the County Government of Nakuru to draw more women in agriculture.

The event was also attended by Deputy Governor David Kones, County Secretary Samuel Mwaura, Chief of Staff Peter Ketienya, CECs Stephen Kuria (Trade), Leonard Bor ((Agriculture), Nelson Maara (Environment) and Chief Officer in the Office of the Governor, Mr Martin Kagai.
