Defense CS Soipan Tuya calls on Maa elders to aid in weeding out negative cultures

There is need for elders to help in weeding out negative cultures in communities.

Defense Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya says the elders have a key role in shaping culture.

She noted that the elders can help through passing knowledge from one generation to the other.

Tuya pointed out that the highly regarded Maasai culture is held together by an elaborate system of practices, traditions and structures passed down generations.

“The role of the cultural leaders in weeding out the negative aspects of culture while embracing education, peace and cohesiveness is worth celebrating,” she stated.

CS Tuya was speaking on Friday August 15, 2025 when she joined in the graduation/EUNOTO of the Ilkiramat age set at Nkareta in Narok North, a ceremony recognized by UNESCO as part of the Urgent Safeguarding List of Intangible Heritage.

The event was also graced by Narok Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu, Tourism PS John Ololtuaa, Narok County MP Rebecca Tonkei, Emurua Dikir MP Hon Johanna Ng’eno, EALA MP Hon David Ole Sankok, a host of MCAs, MAA Council of Elders Chairman Mzee K ole Nchoe among other Narok County leaders.
